How To Become a Better Line Handler in Mantrailing

Good line handling can completely change your Mantrailing experience.

Because during a trail, the line isn’t just there for safety.

It’s also one of the biggest communication tools between you and your dog.

Through the line, we can:

  • feel changes in movement

  • notice hesitation

  • recognise commitment

  • support the dog without interfering

  • and stay connected throughout the trail

But poor line handling can accidentally create, confusion, frustration, loss of focus or even negative associations with trailing

The good news? Line handling is absolutely something you can practice away from the trail!

A Simple Exercise To Practice Line Handling

This is a great exercise to practice smooth handling before adding your dog into the equation.

- Step One

Attach your line to a secure object roughly at the same height as your dog.

- Step Two

Reel the line fully out.

- Step Three

Place the line down on the ground and naturally pick it up with both hands somewhere in the middle. - This helps you discover your natural handling style without overthinking where your hands 'should' go.

- Step Four

Move back to the end of the line and get ready to start practicing movement.

- Step Five

Start moving forward while looping the line into consistent size loops, making sure your back hand is always reaching behind the front hand to maintain contact.

What This Exercise Helps Improve

Practicing this regularly helps develop:

  • smoother movements

  • better coordination

  • safer handling

  • more consistent line tension

  • improved communication through the line

And importantly, it helps reduce accidental interference that may negatively impact your dog while trailing, because even subtle line movements can influence a dog’s confidence and decision making on the trail.

Good Line Handling Takes Practice

Nobody becomes a brilliant line handler overnight.

It’s a skill that develops through repetition, awareness, observation and experience.

But putting time into your handling skills away from the trail can make a massive difference once you’re working with your dog.
